Disk cleanup in Windows XP usually freezes when it tries to locate compressed old files . This is a bug in windows xp which can be rectified and your valuable time saved.
You need to delete the compress old files key entry under the Volume Caches key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches
